Powervault 124T LTO3 operate without picker

Hello,

my PV124T is throwing an over temperature error 0C. Trying to find the faulty part (power supply, drive, picker...) I was using cooling spray in several places but the error stayed.

Is it possible to operate the LTO3 drive without the picker?

Thanks in advance

MD3200 in-band management

$

0

I have a PowerVault MD3200 connected to two R710 servers.

Note, this is the MD3200 --- THERE IS NO LETTER "i" at the end.  This is NOT iSCSI.  This is direct attach.

Sorry to be so direct, but every time I ask anyone about this thing, they all assume "i".

Anyway, both R710 servers have the server administrator on them and the Modular Disk storage manager installed on them.

Both R710's are running Windows Server 2012 R2 and this is a Hyper-V cluster.

Problem:  When I pulled up the modular disk manager on server 1, it said the in-band management was UNRESPONSIVE.  Server 2 said everything, both in-band and out-band were OPTIMAL.  I removed the storage array from the modular disk storage manager on server 1 and did auto-discovery to find it again.  The manager found the storage array and added it but ONLY for out-of-band management.  It did not add in-band management.  And now the storage array is listed as OPTIMAL.

Do I have something to worry about?  Is losing in-band management on one server a big deal?

The Dell server administrator on both R710's say everything is OPTIMAL on the servers as well - this includes the 6Gbps HBA cards.

What do you guys think?  I'm find with not having in-band management on one server as long as I can manage the MD3200.

Other notes:

I can move the hyper-v cluster disks back and forth with no problem.

None of the hyper-v cluster disks is listed as being in Redirected Access mode.

The firmware of both HBA's on both R710's is 7.03.06.

MD3460 SMART DATA Query - Critical Error

I have 2 X Dell R730 servers connected to a MD3460 array ( dual controllers ) with 2 Dell 12 Gbps HBA in each server. The servers are running Windows 2012 R2 and they are clustered. I have installed the Dell PowerVault Modular Storage Manager

on one of the servers.

I keep seeing the following error every 2 minutes in the event log ( PowerTools\ServerHardwareManager\Monitor Service ) on the server

that I have the management software installed on.

Event ID 1034:

Time=( 04/26/16 13:22:10[UTC] )

Type=PD

Code=1034

Desc=Drive error during SMART data query - Unknown error (5h/24h/0h): (adapter=Dell 12Gbps HBA, adapterWwn=Dell 12Gbps HBA, Drive Target Port Wwn=500a0986359ef010).

Any ideas on what is causing this issue?

DNS entry in DELL NAS NX3230

Hello,

I just bought Dell Storage NX3230 . and i configured with our network and it not connected with internet.

just for local network.

I have only 1 router connected with switch and then 3 servers.  one of them is dell Nas NX3230.

I have given the IP to Dell nas 172.16.17.13/24  and server1 has 172.16.17.11 and sever 2 has 172.16.17.12.

the connectivity between server seems ok but latency is so poor and pings  breaks. while troubleshooting i found that in DELL NAS i.e. 172.16.17.13 has DNS entry which i did not put even if you go to lan setting you would not see any dns setting overthere.

I am suspecting this can be issue for poor latency and ping break . but i ask someone he said that dns comes by default from dell.

Please find below details of DNS which i found in DELL nas

10.101.101.100
163.244.101.69
163.244.100.254
163.244.112.253
163.244.101.26
163.244.235.26

is it true????

MD3000 hard drive replacement with Dell firmware drives

$

I have an MD300 that is in need of a hot spare. I bought one matching the model that failed and came up with the problem that it is not a Dell "Firmwared" Seagate drive. I looked around my server room and concluded that I could use this drive in three other Dell servers that are not as "choosy" as the MD3000 so I decided to keep it as a cold spare on the shelf. I then went through Dell spare parts. I made it clear that I needed a drive that would be usable in the MD3000 and what was shipped from Dell was the same model Seagate drive I had on hand with the same 0003 Firmware version. (Third party $110 and Dell was $180, but Dell's did arrive more quickly.)

I noticed while checking for alternative uses for the first drive purchased that my PV600 storage server had 7 of the same model drives as the failed MD3000 drive (ST3400755SS) and had "Revision" as NS25 and I assume that is the firmware version. So it occured to me that I should be able to remove one of these PV600 drives from an intact array and slide in the 0003 firmware drive into that slot on the PV600 and let it rebuild its Virtual Disk (as the PV600 should not reject the 0003 firmware drive). I could then insert the higher level firmware Dell branded drive from the PV600 into the MD3000 and see if it is recognized as an "allowed" drive.

So that is the plan. But I have never removed a "good" drive from an existing RAID 5 array and then replaced it with a different drive. I assume that the PERC controller in the PV600 would just start using the new drive and rebuild its Virtual Disk (provided it was not as "choosy" as the MD3000). After the PV600 successfully rebuilt its array I would then add the Dell branded drive to the MD3000 to to see if it is accepted as a replacement. [If the PV600 rejects the new Seagate drive I assume I could just put the "borrowed" drive back into the PV600 and let it rebuild.] Can someone let me know if this makes sense or is there something I have not anticipated that would make this not work. [If this works I will then have the other 6 matching drives in the PV600 available for a similar swap if needed.] Sorry for the long post.

Dell disk drives P/N confusion

Hello,

I need 900 GB WD9001BKHG hard drives for my MD3220.
I looked at the Support Matrix pdf, and found that I needed disk drives with Dell P/N 4X1DR.

But my sellers have disk drives with completely different P/N's!
Their P/N's look like:

400-22929

400-22932

400-22934

400-22975

400-24104

400-24204

400-AEZD

Why the P/N's differ?
Which Part Number is right for me?

Disk group MD3420

Hi,

I have to upgrade a MD3420 with 9 HDD SAS 1TB, the system is used for only for simple VMWare VM (No Exchange, no SQL and no Filesrv).

Regardless of Raid chosen, should put more mechanical (then hard disk) together (for example, a single disk group with 10 HDD rather than two with 5 HDD) and whether it is convenient to divide each diskgroup in Virtual Disk small or less?

Best Regards,

Maury

DR4100 CIFS access

Can't get into CIFS share on DR4100.

I have OST and CIFS containers on a DR4100. I'm backing up using BE from a Windows 2008 R2 server and connecting to the cifs share from the same server. Yesterday, I disconnected the cifs share before added an expansion shelf for the 4100 and I've rebooted all the devices. The OST came back fine with the additional space and backups ran to it last night, but the cifs share won't accept any authentication. It connects and prompts for authentication,  but the cifs share won't accept either of those. I'm able to log into the DR4100 gui and shell with both the local admin and my active dir account, so I know my admin accounts are working.

"container --show --name cifs-share" at the CLI comes back with the correct server access name, connection enabled, connection status available, etc.

Any ideas? Tx.

Host Group Question

Hi

I have a PV MD3420 connected to one PE R720 via SAS, I have created a Server 2012R2 Failover Cluster for my storage.  I want to now add the second node to the cluster but have made an administrative error when configuring the MD3420.

I created a Host Group for my Failover Cluster nodes and have added Server 1 to this Host Group.  I then configured Server 1 to have access to the LUNs I created rather than the Host Group.

Now I want Server 2 to be able to see the storage, I have added Server 2 to my Host Group but since I configured Server 1 to have access to my storage LUNs rather than the Host Group I cannot get Server 2 to have permission to access the storage (since the LUNs can be assigned to one entity at a time)

If I change the LUN access to the Host Group rather than Server 1, will Server 1 have continuous access to the storage or will it go offline and need reconfiguring in Windows?  I have a live environment running on top of the storage and don't want to play around with it.

Many thanks

nfs storage not responding

$

Hi,

I am facing this frequent outage issue in storage where NFS clients can’t access exported  folders for 20-30 minutes and then connect back again.

Configuration:

-          2 windows servers powervault NX3300 (failover cluster)

-          1 chassis 3660i

-          2 extensions 3060.

-          iSCSI connection from chassis 3660 to windows server (1 Gbps)

-          storage servers export nfs storage to linux servers through 10 Gbps ethernet cables.

I am not able to determine a pattern for this outage.

sometime it happens and sometime it is not.

I can find nfs not responding error in the linux client side servers for certain time

I found some error messages in windows server logs and storage logs as attached. But I am not sure if it is related to outage or not.

Please can you guide me to what might cause this issue?

Thanks.

How to determine the number of logical libraries

$

0

We have a PV TL4000 with 4 half height drives. I hope expert here give me guide on how many logical libraries I should configure the TL4k.

Hardware and software setup:

TL4000 w 4 physical drives;

each drive connects to a PE R910 server via SAS HBA and no second backup server (not planned);

44 slots are populated with LTO5 tapes;

Backup server runs Backup Exec 15;

A number of media sets for different backup jobs (Win, Linux, and VM);

Goal: All four drives should be used to backup to tapes simultaneously. Any drive should be able to access any tapes so more than one backup jobs can use tapes in the same magazine.

Based on above goal, how many logical library I should create? One or four? If it's one, are there any drawbacks and limitations for having one logical library? If it's four, benefits/drawbacks/limitations.

I read through the manual 'Chapter 3' but still not quite clear. If you could offer some tips, it'll be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Yu

Migrate data between to MD3200i

We are going to replace our MD3200i and are thinking of buying a MD3800i. We 100TB of data that we wont to move to the new storage platform.

We are thinking of using the replication license to do this move. Or is there a better way to do the move?

Will LTO 7 will be the Last Product or there is another call for more LTO's to come?

I have seen that it took a long to bring LTO 7 after in unveiling LTO 6 in 2012, do you feel this to have a good move in LTO technology or its just a simple up-gradation in  speed and transfer rate?

NX3100 internal RAID1 OS disk exchange

$

Hi all,

We have this NX3100 + PV MD1200 configured as NFS server running Debian. OS is installed on 2x 2.5" 136GB SAS internal disks configured in RAID1. One of the OS disk is having media errors and we would like to exchange this disk before it fails.

Enclosure Device ID: 32
Slot Number: 13
Drive's position: DiskGroup: 0, Span: 0, Arm: 1
Enclosure position: N/A
Device Id: 13
WWN:
Sequence Number: 2
Media Error Count: 9
Other Error Count: 1
Predictive Failure Count: 0
Last Predictive Failure Event Seq Number: 0
PD Type: SAS

System is out of warranty/support. I ordered new SAS disk from dell and I got 300GB SAS. Since it is internal disk, following the manual system needs to be shutdown to exchange the disk. I found youtube video "Dell PowerEdge R510 Internal Hard Drive Replacement". In this video its mentioned to be very careful when exchanging internal disk because system is off and on boot raid controller can mirror new empty disk to old OS disk destroying the OS. Usually when I exchange hot swap disk I put it in offline mode and prepare to remove with megasascli.

I plan to make full OS disk image before exchange. I will also do the same thing like with hotswap disks, putting failing disk in to offline mode, prepared to remove.

Did someon have same problem? How did you do the exchange?

Best,

Drazen
