Powervault 124T LTO3 operate without picker

Hello,

my PV124T is throwing an over temperature error 0C. Trying to find the faulty part (power supply, drive, picker...) I was using cooling spray in several places but the error stayed.

Is it possible to operate the LTO3 drive without the picker?

Thanks in advance

MD3200 in-band management

$

I have a PowerVault MD3200 connected to two R710 servers.

Note, this is the MD3200 --- THERE IS NO LETTER "i" at the end.  This is NOT iSCSI.  This is direct attach.

Sorry to be so direct, but every time I ask anyone about this thing, they all assume "i".

Anyway, both R710 servers have the server administrator on them and the Modular Disk storage manager installed on them.

Both R710's are running Windows Server 2012 R2 and this is a Hyper-V cluster.

Problem:  When I pulled up the modular disk manager on server 1, it said the in-band management was UNRESPONSIVE.  Server 2 said everything, both in-band and out-band were OPTIMAL.  I removed the storage array from the modular disk storage manager on server 1 and did auto-discovery to find it again.  The manager found the storage array and added it but ONLY for out-of-band management.  It did not add in-band management.  And now the storage array is listed as OPTIMAL.

Do I have something to worry about?  Is losing in-band management on one server a big deal?

The Dell server administrator on both R710's say everything is OPTIMAL on the servers as well - this includes the 6Gbps HBA cards.

What do you guys think?  I'm find with not having in-band management on one server as long as I can manage the MD3200.

Other notes:

I can move the hyper-v cluster disks back and forth with no problem.

None of the hyper-v cluster disks is listed as being in Redirected Access mode.

The firmware of both HBA's on both R710's is 7.03.06.

I have 2 X Dell R730 servers connected to a MD3460 array ( dual controllers ) with 2 Dell 12 Gbps HBA in each server. The servers are running Windows 2012 R2 and they are clustered. I have installed the Dell PowerVault Modular Storage Manager

on one of the servers.

I keep seeing the following error every 2 minutes in the event log ( PowerTools\ServerHardwareManager\Monitor Service ) on the server

that I have the management software installed on.

Event ID 1034:

Time=( 04/26/16 13:22:10[UTC] )

Type=PD

Code=1034

Desc=Drive error during SMART data query - Unknown error (5h/24h/0h): (adapter=Dell 12Gbps HBA, adapterWwn=Dell 12Gbps HBA, Drive Target Port Wwn=500a0986359ef010).

Class=CRITICAL

Any ideas on what is causing this issue?

DNS entry in DELL NAS NX3230

Hello,

I just bought Dell Storage NX3230 . and i configured with our network and it not connected with internet.

just for local network.

I have only 1 router connected with switch and then 3 servers.  one of them is dell Nas NX3230.

I have given the IP to Dell nas 172.16.17.13/24  and server1 has 172.16.17.11 and sever 2 has 172.16.17.12.

the connectivity between server seems ok but latency is so poor and pings  breaks. while troubleshooting i found that in DELL NAS i.e. 172.16.17.13 has DNS entry which i did not put even if you go to lan setting you would not see any dns setting overthere.

I am suspecting this can be issue for poor latency and ping break . but i ask someone he said that dns comes by default from dell.

Please find below details of DNS which i found in DELL nas

10.101.101.100
163.244.101.69
163.244.100.254
163.244.112.253

is it true????

MD3000 hard drive replacement with Dell firmware drives

$

I have an MD300 that is in need of a hot spare. I bought one matching the model that failed and came up with the problem that it is not a Dell "Firmwared" Seagate drive. I looked around my server room and concluded that I could use this drive in three other Dell servers that are not as "choosy" as the MD3000 so I decided to keep it as a cold spare on the shelf. I then went through Dell spare parts. I made it clear that I needed a drive that would be usable in the MD3000 and what was shipped from Dell was the same model Seagate drive I had on hand with the same 0003 Firmware version. (Third party $110 and Dell was $180, but Dell's did arrive more quickly.)

I noticed while checking for alternative uses for the first drive purchased that my PV600 storage server had 7 of the same model drives as the failed MD3000 drive (ST3400755SS) and had "Revision" as NS25 and I assume that is the firmware version. So it occured to me that I should be able to remove one of these PV600 drives from an intact array and slide in the 0003 firmware drive into that slot on the PV600 and let it rebuild its Virtual Disk (as the PV600 should not reject the 0003 firmware drive). I could then insert the higher level firmware Dell branded drive from the PV600 into the MD3000 and see if it is recognized as an "allowed" drive.

So that is the plan. But I have never removed a "good" drive from an existing RAID 5 array and then replaced it with a different drive. I assume that the PERC controller in the PV600 would just start using the new drive and rebuild its Virtual Disk (provided it was not as "choosy" as the MD3000). After the PV600 successfully rebuilt its array I would then add the Dell branded drive to the MD3000 to to see if it is accepted as a replacement. [If the PV600 rejects the new Seagate drive I assume I could just put the "borrowed" drive back into the PV600 and let it rebuild.] Can someone let me know if this makes sense or is there something I have not anticipated that would make this not work. [If this works I will then have the other 6 matching drives in the PV600 available for a similar swap if needed.] Sorry for the long post.

MD3000 - missing iSCSI tab in MDSM after SAS cards replaced in server

Hi,

I have had to replace both SAS 5/E cards in my R510 server and since then, I can see the existing array on the MD3000 attached to it but am unable to map to it in the OS - the iSCSI tab is missing in the MDSM and the error in the MDCU is "Storage Array model is not supported. Please make sure that the target storage array is an iSCSI-based Modular Disk Storage Array."

I have changed the HBA addresses in the MDSM but the fault is still there. I have upgraded the firmware and even tried swapping cards around and sourcing new cables in case they were contributing to the problem but I am still stuck with a very large virtual disk I cannot connect to.

All suggestions gratefully received!

Thanks - Steve

How to Automate Failed Disk Replacement ? PowerVault MD3460 Array - all Disks presented a JBOD LUNs -- CLI / SMCli preferred

$

Background:

We have PowerVault MD3460 Array - all Disks presented a JBOD LUNs. Ie., each Disk is a single VirtualDisk, which in-turn mapped to a single LUN and presented as LUN to a host. Hosts connected via SAS bus., and hosts-to-array SAS WWNs are already masked.

In essence, all the drives are nothing but JBOD Luns to host(s). No RAID, no complex configuration. One Disk mapped as --> One VirtualDisk, in-turn presented as LUN to --> One Host/HBA

Issue:

Every now and then - SATA drives fail, hence, a host would lose corresponding JBOD LUN presented.

Question:

Is there a simple way to REPLACE a failed disk ? We would like to Automate and Simplify this task in our DataCenter environment ? GUI is OK, but not best suited for our environment, we are comfortable with SMCLI tool.

Ie., after replacing the failed-disk with a NEW disk, is there a simple command or process to bring back the configuration (ie., Disk to VD, VD to LUN mapping etc) ?

Thanks in Advance!

** Note: We know we've lost the data on that old/failed disk - in this case., host(s) are handling the Data-mirroring., so we are OK with loss of copy data on that failed disk. No SPARES on the arrays. All we are trying to do is - preserve the original Disk/VD/LUN-mapping configuration AFTER the new disk come into place of the old/failed disk.

Firmware upgrade of PowerEdge MD3400

I would like to upgrade the Raid Controllers and NVSRAM firmware on my MD3400 12 disk array enclosure. What are the proper steps in completing this?  This is a fairly new Storage Array currently running raid controller firmware version 08.20.11.60 and the NVSRAM version is N2701-820890-006. The readme that comes with the zip file doesn't really contain steps just a very basic overview of click upgrade and choose file. So my questions are:

Are their official steps to follow to prevent breaking something?

Can this be done with live vm's running?

Do I need to upgrade my harddrive firmware after upgrading the raid controllers and NVSRAM? If so, is there another place to find the upgrades for the drives? I don't see anything listed under Dell's support site for the Array. I have Seagate SAS drives with Product ID ST600MM0088

I really appreciate any help. Thank you.

Dell PowerVault MD3420 SAS/DAS and Hyper-V Hosts

Hi,

we are planning the following configuration:

1x PowerVault MD3420 Storage (2x SAS controller)

3x PowerEdge Servers directly connected to the Storage, two cables (one to each controller of the Storage)

3x Windows 2012 R2 STANDARD Server that will run Hyper-V

We want to have each of the Windows 2012 R2 Standard Server seeing the same content on the Storage-Disk at the same time, or in other words, one shared Storage Pool/Volume where we will place the VHD's.

After reading through quite some stuff like the Dell Manuals, Forums etc. we have come to the conclusion that this might need a Windows 2012 R2 Standard - Clustered Storage Space / similar to the one described this link: blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/.../

We couldn't find a best-practice / guidance from Dell on how to configure a scenario like this.

It is also unclear what configuration Steps are necessary on the Storage or on Windows. We know that the Windows 2012 R2 Standard Version includes Clustered Storage Spaces - other then Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, back then the Enterprise Version was needed.

To our understanding those are the necessary Steps:

Cable everything and start/install the Servers

Install the Feature/Role for Storage Clustering

Configure the Storage Clustering and create the RAIDs and Volumes

Or do we create the RAIDs and Volumes on the Storage itself over it's Management-Webinterface/Software?

There is a lot of confusing Information out there, and we are new to direct attached storage over SAS (DAS/SAS), since we used iSCSI ever since.

Also, without the Storage Clustering component installed on all the Windows Servers, we wouldn't be able to see the same content on each Server and even cause issues. This is at least our understanding here.

Thank you!

Florian

Proper way to remove MD3000i from the system

Hi,

We have an MD3000i with two MD1000 expansion units that we are trying to decommission. They are setup (iSCSI) on a PowerEdge 2950 running RHEL5.

What's the proper way to take them offline? Do I have to shut down the host or can I just shutdown MD3000i, then two MD1000 without taking down the host? What should I change on the host so that Iit wouldn't look for the MD3000i in the future?

Thank you.

Alex.

but server 2 can't initiate the drives i got error "the operation did not complete. check the system event log for more information on the error"

and log there is no errors listed

install cluster also is okay and add nod no problem but no fail over and partition not listed in node2

but i can't innate the drives in server 2 with no reason

also i can't use ISCSI because it's SAS what should i use as software for sas ?

is that reason that no SAS initiator that i can't reach the drives at machine 2?

in storage i have 1 mapping lun at number 31 only

what's wrong here i don't understand.

any help?

i search a lot and nothing there about md3000 specially

We have a DELL MD3200i that I need some help re-configuring. One of the host servers crashed and we have replaced it with a brand new server. We mimicked the settings of the failed server and now want to re-map the LUN to the new server. I have installed the Disk Storage Manager and see the LUN but I cant seem to map it back to the new server. I created the iSCSI connection and gotten the IQN, now I need to bring it back online in the new server.

MD1220 split backplane with SATA SSDs - need interposer?

$

I've got an MD1220 in split backplane mode connected to two servers each with an H800. I had 8 Dell VDPRV S3500 SSDs in it, but in split mode only four drives are seen. I remembered with an MD1000 with SATA drives I have to have interposers, so tried some SAS drives I have, and that worked.

The question is, then, do I need an interposer for this and if so can someone suggest one?

I need to remove a hard drive from PV600

I would like to remove a hard drive from an intact RAID 5 array on a PV600 and replace it with a same model Seagate hard drive. What I would like to know is what is the correct procedure for doing this. Do I just identify the hard drive to be removed by Blinking it and then remove it and then insert the replacement drive? Or is there some way to prepare the array for this procedure. [I want to try to use the hard drive in the PV600 as a replacement for a dead drive in an MD3000.] Thank you.
