5 hours to create a VHD ?!?!

PowerVault MD3000 (NOT a MD300i)
HyperV VM Host: Win Server 2008 R2 SP1
HyperV VM: Win Server 2008 R2 SP1

I’m just learning how to use my MD3000, and I have a question about attaching to a virtual hard drive. I have created a VHD, and it does seem to be working fine – but it took over 5 hours to complete a 450 GB, fixed-size VHD! Over 5 hours for the progress thermometer phase to complete.

Is this normal?
