Replacing disk - Status: incompatible - Unable to upgrade firmware

Hi

Got a MD3200i. A disk reported as failed so I purchased an identical disk (same Product ID ST3600057SS).
However the new disk reports now
Status Incompatible
Cause: Unsupported
Mode: Incompatible

I suspect this might be because of the disk firmware: 000B. Newest firmware is ES68.

When trying to upgrade firmware I get this message:

ERROR DATA

Command sent to RAID controller module in slot: 0
Return code: Error 249 - The physical disk firmware download operation failed because one or more of the physical disks you selected has a Bypassed or Offline status and is inaccessible. Please make sure the physical disks you selected do not have a status of Bypassed or Offline, and then retry the operation.

Operation when error occurred: PROC_startDriveFirmwareDownload

How to determine if old firmware is really the cause of incompatibility status?

And if so, how to 'activate it' so that it gets a status that allows firmware upgrade?
